Funky New Orleans Horn, a jazz painting

New Orleans Jazz Horn, art by John Tebeau

A few years back, Wifey Mae and I trucked up to Tarrytown, NY to a) eat some really, really good food, and b) see a show featuring the Preservation Hall Jazz Band from New Orleans. The Blind Boys of Alabama opened for them. That was a strong line-up. The line up could do fifty military push-ups (the kind where you clap your hands between push-ups) without a pause. THAT. STRONG.

Anyway, before the show, I spotted the sousaphone belonging to Ben—the musical director of the Hall—laying onstage with the light catching it just so. I snapped a picture and later made a painting based on it. I wanted to jazz up the canvas a little, so I made a collage of paper ephemera (kindly donated by the Hall) on the reverse side. A little Easter egg, if you will. Something to find. A time capsule: handbills, flyers, articles, pictures, etc. All for the discerning New Orleans traditional jazz fan. And you can buy it at my store.

Anyway, if you’re ever down in New Orleans, be sure to check out Preservation Hall. Not many places like it in the world. And if you’re up in Tarrytown, NY, try to see a show at the Tarrytown Music Hall. You will not regret it. Either way, you’ll have a hall of a time.

And here’s a little video featuring the gents of Preservation Hall for your listening pleasure:

And this? This is just a cute picture of Wifey Mae at the piano in Preservation Hall:

Would you like to win a free New Orleans print? Just leave a comment below with your favorite memory of that fair city. Leave it on any of these NOLA series blog posts. On Mardi Gras (Feb. 12) I’ll pick one and some lucky cuss will get a free 8.5″ by 11″ print.

We love New Orleans — we lived there for three months in 2011, and we’re headed back in April. I’m doing daily blog posts sharing my New Orleans-themed art, celebrating what some are calling Super Gras: the Super Bowl was Sunday, in the middle of carnival season leading up to Mardi Gras Feb. 12.
