Tipitina’s painting celebrates a great New Orleans music venue, as Super Bowl + Mardi Gras = Super Gras

Tipitina's Bar in New Orleans, an original painting by John Tebeau

Tipitina’s is one of those ideal places to see music in New Orleans. It’s pretty local, it’s funky, and it’s big enough for elbow room but small enough to feel the show. We recommend it to anyone we know (or meet, or who listen to us drone on and on about New Orleans) who’s headed down there.

The name comes from the Professor Longhair song Tipitina, and he’s their patron saint, his image looming over the stage like Lenin’s at a Soviet-era grandstand.

And you know what else they do at Tipitina’s? They “support Louisiana and New Orleans’ irreplaceable music community and preserve the state’s unique musical cultures” through their foundation. Which brings us to a painting I made, and when I sell it, 10 percent of the sale price is going to that foundation.

The above is a view of the building from the sidewalk, featuring their iconic sign and banana logo. And this is all fine and dandy, but on the reverse of the the canvas, that’s where the surprise is….

On this side I’ve created a collage of Tipitina’s paper ephemera: handbills and ads for shows, and even a few beer labels. Sort of like a time capsule, it’s an Easter egg for anyone who checks out the back of the painting.

If interested, you can buy it at my store. And next time you’re in New Orleans, see who’s playing Tipitina’s. It’s highly unlikely that you’d regret it.

We love New Orleans — we lived there for three months in 2011, and we’re headed back in April. I’m doing daily blog posts sharing my New Orleans-themed art, celebrating what some are calling Super Gras: the Super Bowl this Sunday, in the middle of carnival season leading up to Mardi Gras Feb. 12.

Would you like to win a free New Orleans print? Just leave a comment below with your favorite memory of that fair city. Leave it on any of these NOLA series blogposts. On Mardi Gras (Feb. 12) I’ll pick one and some lucky cuss will get a free 8.5″ by 11″ print.
