The Impetus for Making Original Ann Arbor Art….
I hated Ann Arbor for a while. My first year of college I had a rough time and begrudged the city itself for a few months. Idiotic. It wasn’t Ann Arbor’s fault. It was my mindset. It usually is. You can choose to love something as it is, or rail agains the injustices of the world, including getting dumped and crappy grades and depression, etc., etc. But I stuck it out, got to know that little town, found places I loved and ended up, four years later, not wanting to leave. So why did I?? Had to try a big city, Chicago, which I’d been enamored with since 1973 when my parents took me along on one of Dad’s business trips and we stayed right off Michigan Avenue, and OBOY! there’s the Hancock Building! and OH! BOY!! there’s the Playboy Building!! and HOLY FREAKING BEJEEDY!!! there’s the SEARS TOWER!!! — THE TAAAAAALLEST BUIDLING IN THE WOORRRRRRLLLLLD!!! And so after that, I wanted to try Chicago.
Which I did, and it didn’t sit all that well. Glad I did though. Can’t win if you don’t play.
But back to Ann Arbor. Eventually, I fell in love with it, and specifically many of its particular places. The Law Quad was a block away from my dorm, and man, what a space. Looks like they plucked up a chunk of Princeton or Oxford or Harvard and dropped it kitty corner from the Michigan Union. In fact, that was the intent, to create a space — historically academic in look and feel — in Ann Arbor, but not of Ann Arbor. That separateness and historical flare appealed to me, as did the quiet of the quad, the ivy on the walls, and the enormous oak trees, the kind I grew up with in my hometown. I grew to love the Law Quad and ended up drawing it and making prints. You can buy them here. The original inking for that piece (also for sale) is shown below.
