Jerry Seinfeld and Michael Richards: Chance, Redemption

Jerry Seinfeld and Michael Richards

Loyalty. And talent, remorse, love and maybe… redemption. Jerry Seinfeld and Michael Richards star in a very special episode of Jerry’s Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee that I watched over a year ago. And it stuck with me.

“Thanks for stickin’ by me, buddy.”

There’s a real sense of loyalty and love here, and Richards makes a tentative but strong (though I’d guess calculated and rehearsed) step at redeeming his tarnished image in a sort of public admission of stupidity and “selflessness” during a racial outburst at a comedy club seven years earlier. He thanks Jerry for publicly sticking by him during the scandal, and I love that. It touched me.

Anyway, this is a sweet moment between two guys who really seem to love each other. Both Jerry and Michael share some of their thoughts on life in this episode (zen-like detachment and the existence of unseen metaphysical realities, respectively) and there are a couple good, weird moments to boot.

“Oh, Michael. Free yourself. We’re just raindrops on a windshield.”

One thing I dig about Seinfeld is that he’s been practicing TM since he was 19, which gives him a healthy view of the world that you might not expect, especially for a comedian. Those people are fuggin’ nuts. I love to hear him talk about it, as he did on Alec Baldwin’s Here’s the Thing podcast and once with George Stephanopolous on Good Morning America. When Richards is getting all worked up and self-conscious about barging into a very public coffee shop with Jerry, Seinfeld waves off his objections with the advice “Free yourself. We’re just raindrops on a windshield, Michael.” We’re temporary. We’re here and we’re gone. We’re not a big deal. Chill out and enjoy this brief ride.

There are a ton of good moments in Comedians in Cars. Some of my favorites include a trip to Red Hook’s Fort Defiance with Colin Quinn and Mario Joyner and a visit to a Connecticut diner with a very uneasy David Letterman. An episode or two is perfect as a work break or a treat after dinner. At only 10-15 minutes each, they’re fun-size entertainment snacks, not 1000-calorie bombs of junk.
