I’ll Be Drawing 14 More Great New York Bars. What Are YOUR Favorites?

martini-painting-tebeau-watermarkThere are eight million stories in the naked city, and almost as many opinions on any subject you can name. Dames, mustache wax, ramen, bars. Especially bars. The swankiest, the diviest, the classiest and the friendliest. My job is to keep my ears open, visit ’em and suss ’em out with my bullshit detector set to 11. My name is Tebeau. I’m a cartoonist.

Eventually, I’m expanding my Great Good Places of New York series to 24. 24 of the Apple’s best bars, taverns and dives. Why 24? It’s a good number, is why. And how about Stephen Wright’s (or Paul Newman’s, depending on who you believe) observation: “24 hours in a day, 24 beers in a case. Coincidence? I think not.” That do anything for you? No? Well, to each his own. Get off my lawn if ya can’t stand the heat and non-sequitorialness.

To reach this number — to get to two dozen — I’m drawing 14 more pieces. I’m willing to do the leg-, arm- and gullet-work. It’s my job. What I need are suggestions. The current short list includes The Blind Tiger, the Old Town Bar, Pete’s Tavern, Corner Bistro, P. J. Clarke’s, Neir’s Tavern, Ice House and The Shanty. What else ya got?
