We think of Jean Laftitte as a pirate, but some historians think of him more as a crime boss. Paulie in Goodfellas, or maybe Tony Soprano. He stole a lot, he had other guys stealing for him, he had product to move, and he needed a place to move it. That’s where the blacksmith shop came in.
Lafitte and his brother opened a “legitimate business” down at the east end of the French Quarter. According to the website of Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop, a bar that now calls the building home: “Between 1772 and 1791, the property is believed to have been used by the Lafitte Brothers, Jean and Pierre as a New Orleans base for their Barataria smuggling operation.”
That’s the story, anyway. Bottom line: it’s now a great good place to visit in New Orleans. I’ve enjoyed many an evening sitting out front, watching the sky go from blue to pink to black with orange, urban clouds. Love that sight.
They also make a respectable variation on the hurricane, if you want to compare it to Pat O’Brien’s.
