Pat O’Brien’s wraps around the classic NOLA jazz venue Preservation Hall, well out of the madness of Bourbon Street. Enter from St. Peter, and you pass what feels like two completely different bars: a huge “good-timey” piano bar to your right (with two baby grands, dueling it out), and a perfect old fashioned tavern to your left, right out of central casting. But keep going. The best part is in the back: the patio. It’s an oasis of beauty! Really! Especially early in the day, before the joint gets packed. It’s a perfectly civilized place to kick it, rest your dogs, and have an icy drink. Tell ’em, Fleurty Girl!
I like the mint juleps, myself, but most people go for the giant, sweet, ridiculously red Hurricane, a rummy concoction invented in the 40’s, as according to the O’Brien’s website:
“In the mid 1940’s, Pat O’Brien’s Bar propelled when the Hurricane Drink was created. At that time, there was short supply of liquor such as whiskey, bourbon and scotch. There was, however, access to rum coming up the river. Bar owners were forced to buy large quantities of rum, 50 cases or so, in order to purchase other liquor. Through trial and error, they came up with a drink that everyone loved! Pat O’Brien paired it up with a glass shaped like a Hurricane lamp and the drink was perfected!”
You can turn in that lamp-shaped glass for a $4 credit, or keep it as a souvenir. At any rate, I present another postcard from New Orleans for your consideration: “The Hurricane,” which you can buy on my site for a mere $99.

This was my parent’s favorite place in NOLA. Okay, one of them–there are so many. And the site of Sasha’s first hangover. Ah, good memories. I still use my Hurricane glass for a vase.

Margaret, as a writer, you have GOT to visit. Last I knew, you could even rent the apartment where Tennessee W. wrote “Streetcar.” It’s half a block off Jackson Square, well away from the stink-zone of Bourbon street. Think about it.
J.T and I were hanging at O’Brien’s with Cara J. drinking Hurricanes. Two young gentlemen sitting next to us were overheard talking football. Cara interjected and, when she was summarily dismissed, she proceeded to tear a new one into those meat-heads with her superior knowledge of the subject matter. The two men, obviously outmatched, skulked over their drinks while we ordered another Hurricane.

Though this is not a Hurricane memory it reminds of another drink that can get you into trouble and is similarly named after a storm-the Monsoon! John, Colleen, Doug and I spent a lovely evening at Port of Call drinking Monsoons and having a great dinner. We drank our first Monsoon whilst waiting for a table and when the waitress asked if we would like another Doug, Colleen and I heartily agreed. John decided that he would just have a small one and was summarily belittled and browbeaten not only by us but by the waitress as well. John got the big one. 🙂
I will also say that I love the courtyard at Pat O’s. Along with the Court of Two Sisters it is one of the prettiest in the city.
