A new painting in a series I’m doing that will show in the East Village this fall: “Freak Flag!”
It’s a riff on the flag painting that Jasper Johns did in 1954-55. Now in the Museum of Modern Art in NYC, he painted the flag inspired by a dream. “One night I dreamed that I painted a large American flag,” he said, “and the next morning I got up and I went out and bought the materials to begin it.” That included encaustic (colored wax) and oil painted over a collage of newspaper images and canvas atop three plywood panels. Mine is a modest single panel.
A masonite panel, with freaky fluorescent paints. The collage is made from several Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers comic books. Yeah, I couldn’t resist. I still kind of love those hippies. Hence, freak flag.
Gilbert Shelton first drew the Freaks in 1968 for an Austin alternative paper called The Rag. I think this is back when Austin was still actually “weird.” You been there lately? The only thing weird about Austin is the traffic. And by “weird” I mean “unbelievably bad.” Actually a Texan recently told me that the city can still be considered weird… when compared to the rest of Texas.
The Freak Flag here is a fine painting. It feels good. It has heft. I like that about a painting on a board. And I built a frame for it, and for all the paintings in this new series, including Hustle, Power, Fertility of Chaos, and others. More on those later. Details of Freak Flag fly below.
