A few year ago, I drew a design to be printed on pint glasses for a pub in New Orleans called The Bulldog. Fun little project. I whipped it up, got a $50 gift certificate, a couple glasses and a t-shirt. No big whoop. Then a funny thing happened.
The Winston Churchill English Bulldog Penomenon
My little blog post about the project started getting dozens of hits a day. Traffic on my website spiked, with people directed there by searching for “bulldog,” “english bulldog” (and, often, the more Germanic “Englische Bulldogge”), “Winston Churchill bulldog,” and “Winston Churchill English bulldog.”
Why people would search for this with such vigor, I’m not exactly sure. History buffery? Dog loving? World War II enthusiasm? Or maybe just people searching for an image of tenacious, unbending will to motivate them during our never-ending war on terror and All Things Evil. I don’t know. But search they did, finding images like this:
My image popped up prominently, so a lot of folks clicked on it. They liked it, and some of them started borrowing it, using it as a chat icon, an avatar, things like that. Kind of flattering. One guy wanted to use it on a beer label. Someone else borrowed it as a logo for a cigar shop in Florida, and I’ve since licensed usage for them. Another guy put it on his “Seven Best Churchill & Bulldogs” list. (Why?? I know not.)
But the whole thing is weird in that it started as a lark. I put the old Winston Bulldog out there and things happened. Unintended consequences and all that. The more you do, the more you make, the more the dominoes start clicking and things to take on a life of their own. You just never know.
