(The first in a series called The Morning Hoo-Hah: a groggily strung-together assemblage of sentences that might or might not be bound together — however loosely — by a topic or theme.)
What does one say in a post like this? Something profound might be a stretch, but just pick a topic and write about it. Leadership and making tough calls.
You look at the info you have, and you make your best call, then you don’t whine about it. You learn from your mistakes, but you don’t whine about it. Imagine something of actual consequence like Ike having to okay the D-Day plans. Where to land? Frack, man. Right there alone, tough call. How about the fundamental question: Do we have to invade mainland Europe? Well, I guess that’s a yes. Yep, we do. Done. Next question.
Where? Hm. That’s a toughy. Obviously, we have a good base in England, so France would make sense, but of course they’ll know that. And we only have the little channel to use as crossing. They’ll surely strafe the bejesus out of that. Not if they can’t get to it with their planes. Okay, take out the Luftwaffe and let’s go across the channel to the beaches of northern France.
When? Well, now, there again…. I guess early summer/late spring would be ideal. Not too cold, not too hot. And it’s got to be 1944. We can’t wait around forever. Drag this out another year? No. Okay, so let’s call it June of ’44. We’ll get these boys home by Christmas, with luck. So, what day? Aww, man… This leadership stuff is tough. I don’t know. The 11th? What’s a lucky day? Let’s pick a week and go when the weather and winds are ideal. What if the weather is horrible? Umm…. Come on. A week in June? There will be many nice days. But if not, we’ll just tough it out. We’ll go with the tides. God’s on our side anyway, right?
[Yeah. God is on our side. GOD. That old man in the sky with a beard who WATCHES EVERY SINGLE THING YOU DO even though he’s creating other universes left and right, and apparently takes Saturdays off.]
All right back on point: leadership. What do you do? You make tough calls, and you thank your people. You make the tough calls, stick with them, and you do not whine about it. June ’44? Done. How many min*? 150,000? Boom. Done. Weather be damned.
Books on leadership might be appropriate to read right now. Who’s written good ones? I’d rather read Ike’s than that avaricious, snake-eyed funker Jack Welsh or Welch or whatever the GE guy’s name is. Books on leadership, by good min. Look into it.
The Lenny Bruce book is paying off. The trial scenes are pretty enlightening. Sure he was something of a scoundrel. A rascal. A witty gadfly, yes, but also something of an unsavory character. He was a junkie, man. Tough stuff. Must’ve needed it. What are you gonna do? It was his body, after all. But the trial…. On trial — in San Francisco, no less — for saying blah-sucker. Unbelievable. And not at a nursery school, but at a NIGHTCLUB. Man, how times have changed. I guess you could say the ‘sixties DID change everything. And as Bill Clinton said, if you think they changed things for the better, you’re probably “liberal.” If not, you’re probably “conservative.”
Okay. donesville, daddio.
Boom.
