Well kids, it was waaaaayyy back in May of 1883 the inter-borough monster we know and love as the Brooklyn Bridge opened for business, and every May since 2009 Brooklyn’s own Urban Folk Art Gallery has thrown an art show featuring all manner of bridge-centric art from a whole raft of creative types. This year’s exhibition featured almost 30 — including me — with a reception the evening of May 30.
Being invited gave me a good kick in the tuchus (yiddish for “happy fat”) to finally draw the mighty stone span that’s only a mile north of our apartment, and the show itself was pretty impressive. My entry was a straight-up pen and ink rendition of Herr Roebling’s municipal masterpiece, whereas most of the other artists showed enough dash, imagination and wit to render me like a class dullard, but no worries. This was my first bridge; I promise (if invited to show again) to jazz it up next year.
There was a good crowd, a busted AC system, a seemingly bottomless keg of Pottsville’s finest Yuengling, and about as gorgeous a night as you could imagine for May in New York: mid-70s, moderate humidity and a slight breeze. Sorgatz was there, showing his linocut bridge series. Midler & Samara stopped by after a feast at Bar Tabac down the street. Jimmy Luma, Merrick, Sarah and Kira showed up from KC Arts, my alma mater. Justin popped in, and so did Claude, E.J. and a river of other people. Colleen and I met a cool couple of Brooklyners, Stephanie and Owen, future spaghetti night guests. Afterwards a few of us hit the Long Island for a snack and a drink, and if that’s not a nice evening, then I don’t know what is.
