As you might have heard around the schoolyard, Colleen and I love to spend time down in New Orleans. We’ve been there enough that we’ve got a few local favorites; tried and true places that we hit every time we’re in town. Some of them multiple times. Parasol’s is one of them.
We love it so much that Punch—an online boozy-themed magazine—asked us to write and illustrate a feature about Parasol’s for their “About a Bar” series. Colleen did the scribin’, I did the art and here’s how it came out.
Drawing the scene was a labor of love. On our first day in town I took a couple panoramic shots with the iPhone, sitting at my favorites spot at the bar with Colleen and our friend Pableaux next to me. Here’s the (cropped) shot, plus the final art. I dig the warped perspective.
My favorite bit from Colleen’s story:
“In true New Orleans fashion, your order might come with a side of colorful characters. On one visit, a large male bartender served us wearing a skirted sexy cop costume; it was neither Halloween nor Mardi Gras. Another time, a gambler hit it big on the poker machine and bought a round for the bar. And another night, John had a drink thrown on him when a woman missed the guy she was arguing with.”
