The run-up to Christmas, beginning with those seven famous swans.
That song, “The 12 Days of Christmas”…. Man, that song can get annoying REALLY quickly, especially when performed in a way you can’t stand, like a children’s choir or a crappy, jokey style from the ‘eighties. And it just goes on and on, like a fever dream. And you KNOW that it’s got to go all the way up to TWELVE DRUMMERS DRUMMING and you’re doomed to hear “fiiiiiive gol-den riiiiiings” EIGHT TIMES. At least they speed through the calling birds, French hens and turtle doves (sort of like “lmnop” in the ABC song), but man…. “Five golden rings” gets old at about eight maids a-milking.
But I digress.
I’m doing 30 original works this month. The theme for December is birds. All kinds of birds.
30 original pieces, and yes, they’re for sale. And they’re affordable: $99, which includes free first-class shipping. You can order on my Etsy store by clicking here. Check this blog every day (or the Etsy store) to see the new one. Each one will be 5″ by 7″ on sturdy illustration board.
Any birds you’d like to see painted? Let me know. Suggestions include an the dodo, a jive turkey, a blue-footed boobie, terns, herons and egrets.

Sweet! It looks like Michael Rock is just edging out Phelps…will be get the win?
You gotta account for Phelps’ wingspan, man.
And a peacock in the corner, to add to the birdiness.
Agreed on the carol, but I went to a holiday concert last weekend that had the best version of it I’ve ever experienced. Every section in the audience was assigned a number, and when it was your turn you had to jump up and belt out your part and act out the action. Makes it a lot more interesting and bearable when people are popping up all over the place, miming a motion of milking cows. Iris and I were in the ten lords a-leapin’ section, which was a ripoff because we only got to go three times. Still, it was fun.
And don’t get me STARTED on “The Little Drummer Boy,” which, thankfully, has nothing to do with birds.
Props for noticing the peacock! Bonus bird-points for MJ!
That version sounds pretty fun, but I’d probably get tired of BEING “five golden rings” by eight maids a-milking. Just sort of throw my arms up and go “fyy g0len riiii…” kind of like the third time “the wave” comes around to my section at a football game. Okay, okay. The Wave. I get it, I get it….
I never realized before just how many freaking birds are in that song: swans, turtle doves, calling birds, French hens, geese, and the terminal partridge.
And every year some poor slob of a journalist gets the assignment to total up what it would cost to buy one’s true love all those things in current dollars. IT WILL NEVER DIE!
