Next Show: “You Want It — You Got It” November 7, in New York

Take the cornball Successories inspirational office decor posters that might show a soaring eagle or a snow-capped mountain at sunrise.

Add the bright, bold aesthetic of alternative comics and a dash of Mad Magazine sense of humor and you get John Tebeau’s “You Want It, You Got It” series, opening Nov. 7 in the East Village.

The acrylic on canvas paintings include:

·         Freak Flag! – inspired by the 1950s Jasper Johns flag painting, Tebeau laid down a collage of Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers pages and painted a flag on top, then stuck cut out Freak Brothers images in the star field as an encouragement to celebrate the weird

·         Hustle – Tebeau drew Pete Rose, nicknamed “Charlie Hustle,” as the 1970s era Cincinnati Reds baseball mascot, because although Major League Baseball served Rose with a lifetime ban on being elected to the Hall of Fame for gambling, he remains the game’s all-time hits leader

·         Fertility in Chaos – a whirling silver tornado leaves a colorful storm of flowers in its path, inspired by the Anais Nin quote, “In chaos, there is fertility.”

·         Swagger – the best of cowboy cool, the iconic cowboy hat in earthy tones

Tebeau’s “You Want It, You Got It” opens at the Adjacent To Life pop-up gallery Nov. 7, 6-8 p.m.

Tebeau is a fan of bold lines, strong design and vibrant colors. He taught himself how to draw in elementary school, and started painting later, melding cartoon sensibilities with an appreciation for art that shows wit and dash. He was strongly influenced by the Harvey Kurtzman era of Mad and cartoonists like Don Martin, Robert Crumb and Al Hirschfeld.

He grew up in a small town, North Muskegon, Mich., graduated from University of Michigan before living in Chicago and San Francisco, and now New York. He also lives part time in New Orleans.

Tebeau also has a show called “Great Good Places of Brooklyn” opening at Fort Defiance in Red Hook, Brooklyn, Nov. 13. That show features silkscreened images of six bars in Brooklyn that feel like home without being at home. The pieces are on 100 percent cotton fiber, acid-free Stonehenge paper, each signed and numbered.
