I recently sold a print of Hank’s Saloon to a guy here in Brooklyn. He bought it as a gift for his sweetie, then filled me in on the story behind the purchase. (See below.) I dig it when people fall in love with a place… especially when they were falling in love with each other at that place. Read on. |
Love and the Rock ‘n’ Roll Dive Bar
Hey John, Just wanted to say thanks again! I wasn’t sure if we were going to get a chance to chat but thought I should share my story…. I think the first time I went to Hank’s was in 2001, and I never really frequented it but I went a handful of times over the years. Then in 2018 when I met my girlfriend A—, I was living where I live now on Carroll and Third Ave., and she was living in the Ashland up on Ashland Place and Fulton. So to walk between our apartments it was just a straight shot up or down Third Avenue that would take us right by Hank’s on what became nearly a daily basis. We stopped in for a beer one night early on, and it became a thing we often did whenever we would make the walk, something that we both associate with the early days of getting to know each other. Well anyway A— lives with me now down in Gowanus, and we were walking up on Fifth Ave. a couple of months ago and she spotted one of your Hank’s prints in the window of the frame store, and she flipped out! It’s our 2-year anniversary coming up so I thought it would be a perfect gift. So that’s it! Keep up the good work! (Name withheld because… because isn’t that just what we do?) |
