Who doesn’t love a good hangout? I’m like a cat—I love places. I love my SPOTS. And I’ve got spots all over the country. I celebrate ’em.
Last year I released six prints commemorating some favorites bars of Brooklyn, and later this year I’ll do the same for New Orleans bars to be released this July during Tales of the Cocktail, a four-day drinky convention of sorts. Colleen and I were down there for five weeks recently and I worked on the series between Mardi Gras and St. Patty’s and our birthdays and a funeral. Here’s the inking (they’ll be colorized as silkscreen prints in their final form) for the first two: Parasol’s and Molly’s at the Market, my favorite po-boy servin’ dive bar and Colleen’s unofficial office down there, respectively.
Parasol’s is an old corner bar in the Irish Channel neighborhood. Been around since the ’50s. One side of the place is like a sandwich shop, the other side (they’re separated by a door in back) is a corner bar. Oh, the sandwiches they make. One of the best roast beast po-boys in town, in my opinion.
Molly’s was a big “reporter” bar in the day. A lot of the newspaper and Associated Press folks used to hang out there, one of the reasons Colleen digs it. It opens onto Decatur Street at the southeast end of the French Quarter. They’ve got a fine jukebox and one of the best hot weather drinks on earth: a frozen Irish coffee. “It picks you up as it cools you down!”
Next up: Erin Rose, a local favorite just off Bourbon in the Quarter.
