This painting was dictated to me by our friend Alan Rubin, an artist in Virginia. He suggested “corn on the cob with a pat of melting butter on a blue plate with a red plastic corn gripper on each end.” Well, okey-doke, Alan! Here it is. I am but a vehicle….
(NOTE: Sometimes colors don’t translate well onto the web. Orange, this one in particular is one of those times. This orange is warm and luscious, the color of tangerine juice. It comes out much duller in jpeg format. Just so you know.)
I’m doing a painting each day this month. 30 paintings in 30 days. Being November, the Month of the Feast, the theme is Things We Love to Eat and Drink.
A painting a day, and yes, they’re for sale. And they’re affordable: $99, which includes free first-class shipping. You can order on my Etsy store by clicking here. Check this blog every day (or the Etsy store) to see the new painting du jour. Each one will be 5″ by 7″ on sturdy illustration board.
I’ll need some content, folks, so if you have any suggestions for good subjects, leave a comment or write to me at john@tebeau.com. What goodies would you like to see memorialized as art? What’s your favorite comfort food? Your most-loved childhood treat? The hometown food you miss most? If you moved away tomorrow, what local specialty would you long for? And, looking ahead, what other themes would you suggest?
I had a perfect shot of espresso yesterday, pulled by a guy they call Shark at Ninth Street Espresso in the East Village. I think I’ll have to parlay that work of art (it’s the steamed milk that did it) into a painting. Ruben Mauricio of Ann Arbor, Michigan suggested hot coffee and donuts. He also suggested a painting of the Fleetwood Diner in Ann Arbor. Would that count as a food painting, or would it have to include their famous Hippie Hash? 🙂
Thanks, too, to Michael Stern of RoadFood.com for his mention here.
Yesterday’s painting: “MOXIE”

I love a hot ear of corn on the cob — and I love it all coated in garlic and hot pepper, like we learned from Chi Yang, too.
And Fleetwood Diner hippie hash? One of the world’s most perfect foods. Salty, crispy, savory breakfast goodness. Mmmm. I get mine sans meat, with eggs over easy.
Hippie Hash hits darn near every pleasure center of the brain. And what it lacks you can go buy at Dusty’s pad on First and Jefferson.
Oh, I kid. I kid. 🙂
And a BIG thumbs-up to Chi Yang’s grilled corn. MMM.
