Original Art of New Orleans Bars: Parasol’s

Parasol’s! One of the finest damn dives with the best food I’ve ever been to in my life. And I don’t say “dive” in a bad way. Let’s say it’s an exceedingly-unfancy neighborhood favorite, with a dining room on one side and a bar on the other. And the bar itself is right there on the corner of Constance and Third in the Irish Channel neighborhood. I love this place. Not only for the best damn roast beef po-boy in town (and the firecracker shrimp ain’t bad either… may I recommend that with blue cheese?), but also for the bartender (Billy), the owner (Thea), and the vibe of the place. I love going there for a late lunch and drawing it out for two or three hours, from Abita to Zapp’s.

One of the all-time Great Good Places of New Orleans, Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop on Bourbon Street has been around (as a structure, anyway) since the 1720’s or so. It’s at the quiet(ish) end of Bourbon, a fine place to kick it in a chair outside, facing the street, watching the clouds blow overhead as day turns to night and–if you’re lucky–the stars come out. And on Mardi Gras, 2015 — when it was 36 friggin’ degrees and windy — Lafitte’s saved my ass. They have a fireplace. ‘Nuff said.

Original Art of New Orleans Bars: The Country Club

Ah, the Country Club! Maybe you’re getting staid in your middle age. Once clothing optional, but not any more, it’s still an oasis of green (and a pool, and a hot tub, and an outdoor bar, and a gorgeous front porch, and pretty damned good food, too) in the rather drab deep Bywater neighborhood. An afternoon passes like nothin’ on their poolside patio. On any day over 75 degrees, I’d highly recommend it.

Original Art of New Orleans Bars: Buffa’s Lounge

Buffa’s Lounge of New Orleans sits at the corner of Esplanade (which divides the French Quarter from the Faubourg Marigny) and Burgundy, with the accent on the gun. There’s a nice divey bar in front and a big dining room (with a little bar) in back.

The front room’s a gem; a true corner bar, full of locals but welcoming to tourists. The dining room often has something going on like live music or movie night. One time when we were there, we had both: Tom McDermott and Aurora Nealand played piano and clarinet respectively, accompanying an old Buster Keaton silent on the screen they’d set up. Wifey Mae and I sat at the bar, enjoyed two drinks and some delightfully fried apps, and loved being right there, right then.
