High Maintenance: Web Series Has Fun With Brooklyn

It’s Interesting Times in Brooklyn right now, and I’m actually kind of glad to be here for it.  Yes, it’s supposed to be a Chinese curse, to live in interesting times, but there are perks. The changes are constant. Call it gentrification or revitalization or whatever, but there’s been change, and Brooklyn needed that. And as something of a neophile, I enjoy change. The borough had a rough run of about 60 years, from the Great Depression through the war, white flight, the 1960s riots, the city’s economic collapse in the 1970s, decay, crack, violence, loss of manufacturing, crime, recessions, etc. It was a hell of a slog. Brooklyn’s population peaked around 1950 and by the early ’90s dropped by about half a million. Since then it’s been coming back, creeping toward that 1950 zenith of over 2, 700,000 souls. Yeah, rent is going up. It’s a pretty good place to live, and people want to move here.

The ubiquitous “cat” or “hipster” (see video below for clarification of these terms) deserves some credit with transforming Brooklyn, along with everyone else who has moved here during the past, say, 300 years. Around the latest of these transplants, certain businesses have boomed: premium coffee shops, beard oil & pickling concerns of all stripes, and of course, home weed delivery.

This brings us to the Vimeo series (and soon on HBO, their new platform) High Maintenance, which can, in a 6-to-15-minute episode, serve up more wit, heart and character than some shows do in a year.

Watch some High Maintenance for yourself

Start with the first episode, “Stevie” and take it from there. Check out weird slices of Brooklyn along with “The Guy,” who delivers special Brooklyn medicine by bike.

It’s not a dumb stoner show or about just “getting high” as much as it’s about people, culture, and being here in Brooklyn lately. It’s sweet, funny, big-hearted and witty. Creators Ben Sinclair (who plays The Guy) and Katja Blichfeld are killing it and deserve success.
