Jim Pennington: a Self-Taught Master (and Self-Described “Copyist”) Plying the Trade in New Orleans

Quick shout-out for Jim Pennington, an artist we met on our last trip to New Orleans. Here’s how it happened:

Colleen and I were walking down Royal Street (where there are a ton of galleries and art shops) on a bright warm day. Colleen wore a long, flowing, deep-orange dress. We pass a stoop where a tall, dark-haired woman was sipping a beer. Five seconds later she calls out to Colleen, and asks if she minds having her picture taken. Turns out the woman is asking for the artist in the galley upon whose stairs she’s chillin. Painter Jim Pennington noticed Colleen strolling by, gorgeous and bright, and thought she’d make a good subject for a painting, especially against the Caribbean-looking, teal doors and shutters along that part of Royal. Colleen said yes, and he asked us to walk along like we had been and took a couple of shots. We stopped inside to look at his work, and I was struck. Struck by the loose, semi-impressionistic vibrance of his paintings. There’s feeling there, and masterful use of color and shadow. And old-world, Belle Époque vibe, hearkening back to the gilded age. I thought of Sargent’s loose travel pieces, and even a little Rembrandt and Hopper. Okay, those are my thoughts. Look at the stuff below and draw your own conclusions.

And a final note: Pennington is self-taught. No formal schooling, he learned the craft by copying paintings at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
